Meet Paul Irwin

Paul Irwin, ex-CEO and business owner, shares how Stockspot’s simple, diversified approach supports his long-term goals.

I’m Paul, a 55-year-old, living in Bondi with my wife and our two girls.

My background is in accounting and finance. – starting at Ernst & Young, later moving to Auckland, where I eventually became a CEO. I always had a feeling I’d become my own boss someday.

That moment came when I discovered King of Shaves, a UK challenger brand in men’s grooming. I tried the brand, loved them and convinced the brand  that I would be able to build their business here.

I’ve turned what used to be a side hustle in shaving products into a business that represents brands in the beauty and grooming sector.

With a limited budget, it was a great learning experience on how important product a is, and I still get a buzz out of trying new products, developing relationships and the challenge of competing with much larger brands.

Why I chose Stockspot for our investment portfolio

I’ve always had an interest in investment and finance. I loved the Rich Dad Poor Dad books – they simplified the investment process and taught me the importance of passive investing as a way of generating income over time.

I bought my first shares with a $5,000 inheritance when my grandmother died. I was 17, so I can’t remember what I bought, but I didn’t mind the risk and the variability of results.

When I was 22, my father passed away, and I had to take over managing the estate for my mother. This  experience taught me how to provide her with income to live comfortably, while growing assets to maintain capital.

My Stockspot experience

My journey with Stockspot began in 2017. By then, I loved investing but didn’t have the time to do the research, while simultaneously running my own business.

Instead, I researched simple investment options with low fees compared to managed funds – and Stockspot stood out.

It was so simple to invest and transfer funds into the account. Stockspot offered diversification, and I could weigh it toward growth to suit my  risk profile.

I still play around with direct shares for fun, but the bulk of my investment is now in Stockspot and my super.

What I like about Stockspot

The app makes it so easy to manage investments. I’ve even set up accounts for my wife and kids as well.

The customer service is amazing, and they always respond quickly when I need to get in touch. I have got to know the team, I speak to them several times a year and tune in for their regular video updates.

Stockspot has always delivered solid returns and is helping me towards my financial goals. With the kids accounts, it helps me to teach my daughters the value of time in the market and compounding, so they will be able to build wealth too.

My money tips for those considering investing with Stockspot

My advice to anyone would be to get started now and to invest in growth assets. Inflation is dropping purchasing power for everyone, even with higher interest rates.

Don’t procrastinate, don’t try and time the market – instead remember that it is time in the market that will make the most difference to your returns.

A platform like Stockspot makes it  so easy. Set your risk profile, set up regular transfers, then set and forget. Start early, be consistent and enjoy the returns.
