ETF Performance Tables – Australian Share ETFs

Summary of all Australian Share ETFs by Performance and Returns.

Overall Trends and Average Returns

Australian Share ETFs (excluding leveraged ETFs) delivered an average return of 11% over the past year. If we strip out ETFMs, this figure rises to 12.1%. Rules Based (Smart-Beta) ETFs returned an average performance of 9% whereas Broad based ETFs returned an average of 13.1%, demonstrating why we prefer low cost broad based ETFs in our portfolios.

Of the Smart-Beta strategies, the iShares Edge MSCI Australia Minimum Volatility ETF (MVOL) did its defensive job being a strong performer returning 12.4% over the volatile year. Australian Share (Ethical) ETFs continue their strong momentum, returning an average of 12.3%.

Best Performing Australian Share ETF

Australian Shares (Sectors) outperformed with both Property and Resources ETFs delivering an average 1 year return of 28.6% and 25.7% respectively. The VanEck Vectors Australian Property ETF (MVA) returned 34% whilst Vanguard Australian Property Securities Index ETF (VAP) returned 26%. The difference is likely due to the higher concentration MVA has to office/industrial property shares which have outperformed retail property shares.

Worst Performing Australian Share ETF

Australian Share ETMFs continue to disappoint returning an average of 5.9% (almost half the average broad based ETF), proving passive is outperforming active strategies. The worst performing Australian Share ETF was the K2 Australian Small Cap Fund (Hedge Fund) (KSM) down -14.3%.

Largest Inflows/Outflows

The Vanguard Australian Shares ETF (VAS) and Betashares Australia 200 ETF (A200) received the majority of the flows, with $722m and $524m respectively. A200’s launch has resulted in outflows from two of the dominant ETFs that track the ASX 200 Index, being the SPDR S&P/ASX 200 (STW) and iShares Core S&P/ASX 200 ETF (IOZ) who saw large outflows of -$221m and -$188m respectively.

We also saw noticeable outflows in high dividend yielding strategies with The BetaShares Australia Top 20 Equity Yield Max Fund (YMAX) losing -$69m and BetaShares Australian Dividend Harvester Fund (Managed Fund) (HVST) losing -$43m. These ETFs did not keep pace with other yielding strategies, potentially due to investors losing appetite for active strategies and a preference for more vanilla ETFs.

New Funds

3 new Australian Share ETFs came to market over the year. A200 launched in May 2018 and is the lowest cost Australian Share ETF on the market charging just 0.07% p.a. 2 new active funds also launched with EInvest Income Generator Fund (Managed Fund) (EIGA) and InvestSMART Australian Equity Income Fund (Managed Fund) (INIF) launching in May 2018 and June 2018 respectively. Both active strategies have had reasonable uptake, with INIF having $39m in FUM and EIGA having $23m.

Stockspot’s chosen Australian share ETF

Our chosen Australian Share ETF, the Vanguard Australian Shares ETF (ASX: VAS) returned 11.7% over the past year, slightly underperforming the large cap bias focused ETFs. VAS has still been a top performer returning 11.3% p.a. over the last 3 years and continues to close the gap on STW in the FUM race.

For more information, we compared VAS to its peers in our Australian Share ETF Review.
